Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the mechanism of action and appropriate uses for several commonly-prescribed pediatric medications.
  • Discuss scenarios in which each these commonly-prescribed pediatric medications may be potentially harmful or contraindicated.
  • Identify the unique physiological changes that occur with each sequential decrease in core body temperature.
  • Discuss the merits and application of passive versus active rewarming strategies.
  • Apply important interventions to stabilize patients presenting with altered mental status.
  • Differentiate among various toxidromes that can cause altered mental status.
  • Discuss the important distinguishing features between common versus life-threatening causes of headache in children, identifying the pertinent signs and symptoms that signal danger.
  • Identify key historical features and physical exam findings that inform our diagnostic differential, clinical work-up, and treatment.
  • Identify the most common presentations of abuse, and the common false histories provided to cover the abusive.
  • List the 5 psychosocial factors that place a child at increased risk for physical abuse.
  • Apply current STI testing recommendations for the pediatric and adolescent patient.
  • Apply current STI treatment recommendations for the pediatric and adolescent patient.
  • Explain the processes involved in building a quality program for pediatrics within the community and how to work within their environment to improve their own processes.
  • Identify the importance of culture in establishing and sustaining improvements in the community and beyond.
